Old Oakhamians in the Olympics!

Oakham School has produced four Olympians throughout the years. Read more about Crista Cullen, Frank Jerwood, David Howlett and Alex Stadler.

As we’re halfway through the 2024 Olympic Games, let’s take a look back at the Old Oakhamian Olympic athletes who have represented their country in the games.

Frank Jerwood (‘05) was a British Rower who competed at the London 1908 Olympic Games. He won bronze as part of the men’s eight crew. After the Olympics, Frank came back to Oakham School as a Chaplain from 1919 to 1938. While at Oakham he was also the first Housemaster of Wharflands where his Rowing Oar is still displayed today.

David Howlett MBE (‘68) competed in the 1976 and 1992 Olympics as a sailor for Great Britain. David has gone on to coach Ben Ainslie and Ian Percy, who have both gone on to win Olympic Gold, with Ainslie becoming Britain’s most successful Olympic Sailor. David was also the head coach for the German Olympic team in 2016. During his coaching career, David has seen through six Olympians

Crista Cullen MBE (’03) is a double Olympic medallist Hockey Player for Team GB. Crista competed in Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012, winning bronze in front of home crowds. Retiring from Hockey after 2012, Crista returned to the GB squad in 2016, making history as part of the women's team that stormed to gold at Rio 2016, winning all eight of their matches.

Alex Stadler (‘15), a German hockey player, competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, where he played in all the matches.
