Oakham School Chapel Celebrates Centenary with Alumni Carol Service

The Old Oakhamian community came together in warmth and song this weekend as alumni from across generations returned for a special Carol Service marking the 100th anniversary of Oakham School Chapel. The centenary event, held on Sunday 30th November, welcomed former pupils, staff, trustees, and friends of the School to honour a century of worship, reflection, and shared memories.

The Chapel, dedicated in 1925 to honour the fallen of the Great War and regarded as the spiritual heart of the School, was filled with attendees beneath its vaulted ceiling, illuminated by candlelight and festive decorations. For many alumni, the service offered a rare opportunity to stand once again in the space where they had sung hymns or found quiet moments amid the bustle of school life.

The service opened with O Come, All Ye Faithful, or, as Clive Coombes (’78) fondly quipped, “Oakham, All Ye Faithful”. As the School Choir sang, their soaring harmonies set a reflective and joyful tone for the afternoon. The School Chaplain, Fr Tim Tregunno, welcomed attendees with heartfelt words: “This humble, beloved Chapel, kept alive by the care, music, tradition, and love of so many, stands not grand in architecture, but magnificent in spirit. Today, we celebrate her quiet beauty, cherished by all who know her.

Readings were delivered by alumni spanning the 1960s to the 2000s, each sharing a passage reflecting the Chapel’s enduring significance. Among those taking part were Peter Lawson (’60), Clive Coombes (’78), Naomi Corbin (née Cooper, ’03), and Sarah Gomm (Hon OO). Additional readings were offered by Brian Needham (Hon OO), Jonathan Stevens (’79), John Sterland (’77), and Headmaster Henry Price. Prayers were led by Rev. A. Aldous.

A particularly special moment came when the organ filled the Chapel with a newly commissioned piece, Carol, composed by Paul Spicer (’70) to a text by OO theologian Thomas Merton (’32). The Choir’s performance resonated throughout the space, blending music and reflection in a truly memorable tribute.

Before the service, alumni gathered in the Barraclough for mulled wine and mince pies, sharing stories, reconnecting with old friends, and celebrating the milestone together. For many, the afternoon was not only a celebration of architecture and tradition but a poignant reminder of the enduring bonds that connect the school community across generations.

A retiring collection was taken in support of the Oakham School Foundation’s Life Changing Bursaries and Scholarships ensuring talented young people can join our community regardless of their background.
