Oakham School’s STEM on Track project continues to gather momentum, giving pupils invaluable opportunities to apply science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.
Over the past year, students involved in the programme have been immersed in every aspect of kart preparation and development, from engineering design and technical problem-solving to testing, teamwork and race-day operations. The initiative has provided pupils with a unique opportunity to experience STEM learning beyond the classroom while developing confidence, resilience and collaboration skills.
A recent Test Day, held on 7 March at Whilton Mill, marked another important milestone for the team. Competing alongside 85 school teams from across the country and involving around 1,200 students nationwide, the school’s teams successfully completed all key stages of the event, including driver assessments, Motorsport UK Level Scrutineering checks and 40-minute endurance test sessions.
Oakham School Kart 15 delivered an outstanding performance, winning its heat and finishing 10th overall out of 81 teams on the day. Kart 84 placed 51st overall, while technical issues with the transponder meant no data could be recorded for Kart 71.
Looking ahead, our school will join 95 teams at the National Finals on 20 June, which will also include international competitors from Holland and Hong Kong. In an exciting development we are delighted to welcome the two Hong Kong teams to assemble their karts at Oakham School ahead of the competition.
The project’s success continues to highlight the value of combining academic learning with real-world engineering experience, helping to inspire the next generation of engineers, designers and innovators.
