Old School, Our Historic School Building to Be Transformed

Into A

State-of-the-Art Performing Arts Hub

This much-loved school building with more than four centuries of history is entering a new phase. We are thrilled to offer a glimpse into the work taking place to adapt the historic space for contemporary performance use.

Known affectionately to many as “The Shakespeare Centre,” the original school building, dating back to 1584, is being carefully restored to create a modern home for Drama and Dance. The project will provide a much needed fully accessible, state-of-the-art performance venue while preserving the character and heritage of the historic structure.

For generations of Oakhamians, the building has held a central place in school life. It has served as a classroom, rehearsal space, examination hall and performance venue, helping students develop confidence, form friendships and discover their talents both on and off the stage.

The refurbishment also reflects the building’s deep-rooted legacy within the school community. Once the classroom of two highly regarded teachers, Rod Smith and Dermot Gilvary, the renewed space will honour Oakham Drama’s lasting impact on generations of pupils, now carried forward by the current Director of Drama Gilly Norell.

The project is designed not only to preserve an important part of the school’s history, but also to enhance opportunities for future students, particularly in the performing arts.

Work is continuing on the transformation, with the completed venue expected to play a key role in school productions, rehearsals and teaching.

The School is inviting alumni, families, and supporters to take part in the project through its ‘Dedicate a Seat’ initiative.”
